How a Roman was named

A Roman citizen had three names, the tria nomina. The first was the praenomen, the name his family called him by, drawn from a list so short that Romans abbreviated them: M. for Marcus, C. for Gaius. The second, the nomen, named his family, his gens: Julius for Caesar's, Cornelius for the Scipios'. The third, the cognomen, began as a nickname and often stuck for generations. Cicero means chickpea.

The names here are all real Roman ones. They are chosen from your name, never traced from it, so the same name always gets the same answer. The only cognomina on the list are the flattering ones.
